Chapter 3
I walked steadily across to my Aunt’s pink house, I always
wondered about that house when I came to visit I always thought it looked
really weird. I thought about Toodles , “Toodles!” I called, he came running up
to me and started walking with me. How could
this have happened? I thought. What did she leave for? I turned
around and went back to my house. I went into my room and looked around and
then I saw something, a yellow piece of paper stuck to my door, it read: Kayla,
I need to leave, there will be a man at our house saying I have died. It is not
true; I have only gone out of the country to find your father. The reason the
man is saying I am dead is because this is top secret
The rest of the letter was cut off, I stood there frozen. My
mom wasn’t dead! She was finding dad! But still she was gone and I was alone.
Toodles jumped up on me, he gave me an idea. I had to call Lilly.
She had given me her phone number, she said to call her in
the morning before school, and it was still morning and before school. I dialed
her number, a man answered the phone. “Hello?” said a gruff voice, “Oh hello” I
said, “Is Lilly Dell there?” there was a pause then the voice came back on, “I’m
sorry but, you must have the wrong number.” “Oh” I said, “I’m sorry I bothered
you.” and then I hung up.
I went into my mom’s office and took out the phone book; I
looked up Dell, “Larry Dell, Sally Dell, and Lilly Dell!” There it was but that
was the number that I had called… that’s weird. “Excuse me aren’t you supposed
to be at your Aunt’s house?” said the man in the suit, “I’m sorry but this is
my HOUSE!!!” I screamed, “AND I HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO BE IN MY OWN HOUSE!!!” The
man looked down at me and said, “You do not have a right to be in this house,
it belongs to your mother.” I looked at him and said, “WHO IS NOT DEAD!! YOU
LIAR!!” I ran out the door with the phone book in my hand and Toodles in the
other.
I had ran all the way to school, what can I do now? If I
told the teachers they would think I was crazy. Running into school with
Pajamas on, a phone book and a dog, I searched the Campus, trying to find
someone that I knew. Then I saw Lilly, she just got off the school bus, looking
worried. I looked around, I didn’t dare look at the sky, looking for a possibility
to run to her and run back. I set Toodles down and the phone book too. I ran as
fast as I could to her. I stopped in front of her, she stared at me, “Come on!”
I said. She ran towards me, and we ran into the woods around the school.
“What the heck?” she said, looking around. Then I told her
everything that happened. Her eyes started getting larger with every single
word I said. When I was done she said, “Wait your dad is missing and your mom
is doing something secret and everyone thinks she’s dead?” “Yep.” I said. She
stared, “What?” I said, “My dad is missing and my mom went missing today!” She said. I couldn’t believe it, maybe our
parents were like working or something, and I told Lilly that. “Maybe!” she
said. “Maybe we had to be together to find our dads or something.” I said, “Yeah.”
She said.
“Hey I called you this morning and a guy answered and said I
had the wrong number.” I said, “Oh uh… I wonder… why he said that…”said Lilly.
I wondered if she was hiding something from me, but I just put it aside. “Well
we have to get some questions answered first and what did your dad do?” I
asked, “Oh he was a scientist, he studied the sky.” She said. “That’s what my
dad did too!” I said. “Well I have to tell you something about what I’ve been
seeing in the sky, but first I have to get dressed and we have to get some
questions answered.” I said. And we started walking away together.
When we got to the gate that led to my house, we opened it
and there was an eight-foot tall spider guarding the entrance. All the color
from Lilly’s face was gone.
